“And yet...in Kenya, less than half of young people attend high school", according to UNICEF.

Many young people in Kenya dream of going to high school. However, they are living in harsh poverty, without money for the compulsory tuition.

These young people often live in large families with a parent or grandparent struggling just to provide basic necessities. Many are living on small farms, without even enough food.

The Mama Ada Foundation steps in to provide scholarships for these young people, enabling them to find their desk in a classroom. Local partners select the students, as they know the needs of their communities best. They rally around these students, providing them with encouragement and support to achieve their dreams.

And they do! Some scholarship alums in Kenya have established the Mama Ada Alumni Association. They find ways to support young students, such as giving them school uniforms, which their families cannot afford to buy for them. These remarkable alums are truly “paying it forward”, rallying to lift their communities now, just as The Mama Ada Foundation enabled them to attend high school (and sometimes college).

"According to the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute, more than 14.5 million out of Kenya’s total population of 46 million is food insecure.”

The Mama Ada Foundation creates opportunities for people living in the Rift Valley Province in Kenya. One way that the organization does so is by giving seeds to farmers to plant a crop to feed their families.

These farmers live in small mud huts on one or two-acre farms called “shambas.” These shambas dot the countryside near Mama Ada’s farm in Ziwa, as the rolling fields blend one into another. On many of these farms, grandmothers and mothers are raising children alone, as they work so hard just to provide food for their families.

Local partners select the farmers who are most in need, as they know their communities best. With this simple gift of seeds and fertilizer, a family is able to put food on their table. And often, they just need a boost to be on their way to self-sufficiency. This is where The Mama Ada Foundation steps in, by providing the farmers with access to a holistic and innovative project called the Mama Ada Ag Pilot Project.

The goal of this project is: “To connect farmers to information, technology, and markets to move from subsistence agriculture to business farming to increase their income, enhance food security and improve the well-being of their families.”

It has been a number of years since several of us journeyed to Kenya and started The Mama Ada Foundation. After spending time in Mama Ada’s beautiful green gazebo in her yard, we came back determined to open a nonprofit organization in the United States.

Thanks to scholarships from The Mama Ada Foundation (since high school), Maurine Lagat (right) was able to recently graduate from Moi University. She is now a Registered Nurse at Alexandria Hospital, thanks in part to Japheth Yegon – another scholarship alum and head of administration at the hospital. Maurine and Japheth no longer lie awake with worry at night – for they have futures of opportunity and hope.

Often in my daily life, I’m going to the same places, with “my people.” And while I know different sorts of people, I am bound in many ways to similar experiences with others. Yesterday and today and hopefully tomorrow, I am blessed to have food, as one example, as are many of my friends and family.

I’ve had many conversations with my sons, Evan and Ben, about how we each have gifts – not just a special few, but everyone has gifts. Some might have easy conversations with others, some might have the ability to fix a faucet or a motor, some might create beautiful paintings, while others solve math problems with the precision of a calculator.
